We understand that at times calibration gets disturbed due to vibrations, and thus, KritiKal’s in-house surround view system solution addresses this challenge. Our approach enables users to perform calibration at their own location conveniently. The solution features optimized software algorithms without any third-party or Open-Source Software (OSS) components that impart geometric alignment and photometric alignment for color and brightness correction.  It synchronizes and merges high-resolution video streams in real-time for seamless 360-degree view car camera coverage and composite view synthesis of 2D-bird eye view images. Its other extensive features include 3D-surround view, split view (3D+bird’s eye), 3D reverse parking assistance, auto recovery of camera failure, auto activation, system diagnostics, single/left/right camera view, integration with infotainment display. Algorithm sub-components are modularized to match the SOC pipeline elements; this helps in faster porting, configurations and optimizations on different hardware and firmware topologies. It features active fault detections at various stages with intelligent mitigation and fail-safe mechanisms focusing on Functional safety (ISO 26262).

Calibration Pattern Detection

The vehicle 360 camera system utilizes a unique calibration pattern to enable an easy do-it-yourself calibration process for users or drivers. It performs robust detection and computation of homographic models across cameras. This is helpful for image correction and stitching of captured images in real-time. 

Image Detection

The surround view monitoring system performs detection of heavily warped unique calibration patterns in the individual fisheye images. It then utilizes intelligent image processing techniques in a 360-around view camera to detect multiple calibration patterns that may feature heavy perspective distortion. 

Image Correction

The solution then executes bird’s eye view correction processing using advanced computer vision techniques. These include corrections in parameters, such as illumination, color, and brightness across cameras. This helps in seamless transition in the 360° view. 

Image Alignment

The surround view monitoring system performs image correction process, including the alignment of the image. It achieves state-of-the-art results even with limited compute resources. The solution can run in real-time without third party or OSS dependencies to generate the bird’s eye view. 

Image Blending

It then blends the captured images together and stitches them to create a two-dimensional image. The same is displayed on the vehicle’s infotainment system for a clearer view and environmental understanding. It also created static 3D images (Bitmaps, Viewpoint Selection). 

Additional Features

The solution enables users to gain a complete view of the vehicle and its surroundings using a surround view camera system with four different cameras. It is user friendly, optimized for a Quadcore ARM processor, lightweight, and easy to set up and calibrate by the driver or user.
