End-to-End IoT Pet Health & Activity Monitoring Platform

The Problem Statement

The client required a scalable, production-ready pet monitoring platform that combined the wearable hardware with cloud-connected software. 

Key challenges included:

· Designing a compact wearable capable of monitoring multiple health and motion parameters.

· Achieving a battery life of at least two weeks despite continuous sensing and wireless communication.

· Accurately interpreting sensor data to identify activities such as walking, running, standing, jumping, resting, and sleeping.

· Integrating multiple sensors into a unified, power-efficient firmware architecture.

· Providing secure BLE communication while supporting future cloud connectivity.

· Preventing data loss during wireless disconnections through local storage and synchronization.

· Developing a scalable cloud platform capable of receiving, processing, storing, and visualizing device data.

· Building intuitive mobile and web applications for users, administrators, and business stakeholders.

· Creating an infrastructure capable of supporting product registration, subscriptions, user management, and future commercial deployment.

The Solution

KritiKal delivered an end-to-end connected pet monitoring platform consisting of wearable hardware, embedded firmware, cloud services, mobile applications, public web portals, and administrative dashboards. 

Smart Wearable Device: 

The Smart Neck Band integrates multiple sensors to monitor both physiological health and behavioral activity. The wearable continuously captures heart rate, body temperature, and oxygen saturation (SpO₂). Using accelerometer and gyroscope data, the embedded firmware identifies walking, running, standing, jumping, playing, resting, and sleeping. The system also detects abnormal conditions, such as excessive inactivity or unusually rapid movement, helping pet owners identify health concerns early. 

Embedded Firmware: 

KritiKal developed custom embedded firmware that integrates multiple sensing modalities while maintaining low power consumption. Core capabilities include multi-sensor data, activity recognition algorithms, BLE communication, local data buffering, automatic synchronization after reconnection, configurable reporting intervals (5, 15, or 30 minutes), Wi-Fi and cloud connectivity support, basic SSL-based cybersecurity implementation, Wi-Fi-based location sharing capability, support for wired sensor integration, and firmware support for prototype (V2) enclosure revisions and hardware enhancements. 

Optimized Hardware Design: 

The team designed a compact wearable platform optimized for comfort, durability, and long battery life. Engineering activities include power architecture optimization, schematic review and refinement, PCB miniaturization, BOM optimization for cost and performance, battery selection supporting over two weeks of operation, prototype enclosure development, and mechanical optimization for collar-mounted deployment. 

Cloud & IoT Platform: 

To transform the wearable into a connected IoT solution, the team developed a cloud backend responsible for device provisioning, secure device communication, IoT device configuration, raw data collection, data normalization, cloud storage, API development, analytics support, and historical data management. The cloud platform serves as the central communication layer between wearable devices, mobile applications, and web portals. 

Mobile Applications (iOS & Android): 

KritiKal developed user-facing mobile applications enabling pet owners to pair the Smart Neck Band, view health metrics, monitor activity history, review sleep patterns, visualize historical trends, and receive synchronized data after connectivity interruptions. The mobile application communicates with both the wearable device and the cloud platform. 

Public Website: 

The team also developed a public-facing website supporting customer onboarding and product management. Features include product information, customer registration, user login, customer dashboard, product purchase, subscription management, payment and refined workflows, purchased device visibility, and subscription status monitoring. 

Administrative Web Portal: 

A secure web-based administrative portal was developed for internal business operations. Capabilities include IoT device management (device provisioning, configuration, and monitoring), data management (raw data ingestion, normalization, reporting datasets, and analytics preparation), API management (REST APIs supporting mobile applications and backend integration services), user management (role-based access control (RBAC) including administrator, user, and CFO), and business operations (subscription management, administrative dashboards, financial reporting, and operational reporting).
