The Problem Statement

Studies have revealed that two-wheelers are more prone to accidents than other vehicles on the road. A smart helmet that can sense the on-road dangers & automatically make calls to riders’ emergency contacts will help in reducing the number of accidents. Anticipating this need that was further backed by a market survey of road accidents conducted in 5 different cities – KritiKal along with its co-investment partner Napino Auto & Electronics Ltd. started working towards building a Smart Helmet System based on Bluetooth technology. The system would incorporate mike & speakers and two powerful modules- Helmet Module and Handle Module.

The Solution

Utilizing its vast experience in Embedded Systems and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, KritiKal Solutions infused advanced wearable technologies with sensor package and microcontrollers to build a smart system that triggers emergency alerts in case of unfavorable situations.

The Helmet Module in the system is powered by dual mode Bluetooth technology and an intelligent in-built embedded system with an easy control access of two buttons attached to the helmet. One button is used for turning on/off the helmet system and another button is used to activate the voice recognition system, Google Now, on the user’s smartphone. Interestingly, this helmet can be charged via a USB cable.

The Handle Module based on the Bluetooth Low Energy technology comprises of five buttons that a user can fix on the handle of their bike. With handy button controls to power on/ activate Google Now, accept the call, reject or disconnect the call, and level up/down the volume, this device delivers a convenient hands-free experience to the riders. This system provides turn by turn directions sourced through users’ phone and allows them to keep it in their pocket with hands-free calling.

  • Easy button controls to power on/ activate Google Now, accept the call, reject or disconnect the call
  • In-built sensors to detect crashes

Benefits Delivered

KritiKal’s smart helmet is an innovative Internet of Things device that increases connectivity between people, data, and outside environment. A suite of in-built sensors inside the device detect a crash and alert the family members/friends/relatives of the user with the GPS coordinates of the incident. This comprehensive helmet system is advancing rider safety and giving them access to more control, so that they can stay connected and focused on the road. To put it quite simply- the smart helmet developed can help save lives.
